The I Believe Initiative Induction Ceremony November 2023

On October 5th, the Honorable Custos Johnson as well members from the JPJ Excecutive Committee Chairman Kimberly Fletcher, Treasure Paul Williams, and Secretary Carol Vezina visited with students at Iona and Oracabessa High Schools. We encouraged and inspired students to invest their time wisely as well as addressing conflicts effectively. We were well received by students and faculty members. This is a part of our mission to help empower students to become confident individuals who are equipped to excel in all aspects of their lives.

Justice Of The Peace Application Process

The Ministry of Justice through its Public Law Restorative and Preventative Justice Unit provides for the administration of Justices of the Peace services. A Justice of the Peace (JP) is a person of unquestionable integrity, who seeks to promote and protect the rights of individuals. The position of a JP originated in England in 1361. The “peace” to be guarded was the “King’s (Sovereign’s) peace”. The steps to become a Justice of the peace include:

Confirm eligibility
Complete the application
Take the Oaths of Office
Begin service as JP

VOLUNTARY SERVICE

Justices of the Peace (JPs) in Jamaica volunteer their time and expertise to serve their communities. In St. Mary, they work closely with the Custos to mediate disputes, offer legal guidance, and support community initiatives. By doing so, they help maintain peace, uphold justice, and foster a sense of community trust and cohesion.

JP's partnered with The Jamaica Redcross, St Mary, Oracabessa Area Group for Read Across Jamaica Day 2024.
