The ceremony was officiated by Governor General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen. Attendees included Johnson’s family, friends, education fraternity members, civic and political leaders, and cadet movement members, where Johnson holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In his address, the Governor General expressed confidence in Johnson’s ability to bring transformative leadership to his new role, similar to how he positioned St. Mary High School as a top-performing institution. “He willingly shared his talent and ideas with other schools in the parish and was instrumental in implementing an intervention strategy to improve literacy and numeracy in primary schools. I have no doubt he will take that transformative approach to his work in the parish at large,” he said.
Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, in a message read by Minister with responsibility for Housing, Hon. Dr. Morais Guy, highlighted Johnson’s ability to offer inspired leadership to his community. She praised him for not only educating the parish’s youth but also instilling discipline and good values and attitudes, which are essential for building strong communities and a strong country.
In his address, Johnson emphasized the importance of education in instilling discipline and building character. He noted that “in educating ourselves, we must not only stuff our brains, but we must also transform our hearts.”
A graduate of the University of the West Indies and the India-based University of Rajasthan, Johnson was appointed Custos for St. Mary on June 23, following the death of Hon. Jeffrey McKitty after a period of illness.
